What to Do When You Get Into a Fender Bender

Though the damage is usually minor, getting in a fender bender can still be scary and bewildering. Especially if it’s the first time you’ve been in this situation, you may be unsure of how to proceed. It’s important to still take the proper steps with insurance and authorities to avoid further problems.

Read on for our guide on what to do when you’re in a minor car accident like getting rear-ended or hit at a low speed in the parking lot.

1. Stop your car and communicate with the other driver

Calmly park your car and get out to talk to the other driver. If it’s not a high traffic area, stay in the spot where the accident occurred. If there are many other drivers around, move your car to the side of the road.

2. Collect necessary information

Make sure the other driver isn’t physically hurt, then ask for their driver details including:

  • Full name
  • Insurance name and policy number
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Email address

3. Get evidence

Take photos and notes of what happened immediately so your memory is fresh and you can prove your point. The other driver may try to commit insurance fraud or sue you in the future, and you’ll want all the evidence you can get to prove your innocence.

4. Make phone calls

Any fender bender should be reported to your insurance company so you can fill out a claim and get the help you need. You may also want to call a family member for support, a doctor in the case of injury, or the police if there is damage to property.

5. Follow up

Follow up with the other driver over email, text, or phone call to make sure everything is in order and no injuries have manifested themselves over time. Get in touch with your insurance again over the next couple weeks to make sure you’re clear on the implications of your fender bender.
